As part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Legends Project, Diya volunteered to write her first biography that came to ~ 2500 words, or a long-form article. Diya believes language matters. Being part of a project that focused on crafting an accurate narrative appealed to her.

Using SWE archived material and extensive online searches for secondary references, Diya wrote a narrative that fairly represented Sparling's technical achievements and life. Women engineers' achievements are often light on the technical and heavy on the "first woman". Sometimes, their achievements are not recorded in the first place. The goal of the Legends project is to start fixing that by providing citations on widely-used and accessible websites like Wikipedia. Diya will be a virtual panelist for the SWE 2023 Annual Conference, sharing her learnings as a research writer on this project.
